I think you are getting to the point in realizing that the "pain cave" of a 5K is much different than a marathon - in that it almost hurts the entire time (or, in my personal experience, 5Ks are like riding the edge of pain the entire race) and you are still finding additional gears beyond that. I'm not advocating that you end up in a medical tent, but I think the crucial part of the 5K is finding that line and being able to ride it. The right course with the right weather conditions will present itself sometime this year. And I laughed out loud when I read that you prefer the slow burn of the marathon to the short pain train of the 5k. I am the complete opposite. I'd much rather have a short painful race🙂 I do like it that you used this particular race to embrace the suck and practice pushing yourself so you can get a feel for pushing past the "omg I'm gonna die if I don't see the finish line "feeling. Keep up your hard work, I foresee 19s on the clock pretty soon!!!Melissa Cunninghamhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16482309725985261596noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2189875022254484779.post-88135909268906200952018-05-14T08:12:01.378-04:002018-05-14T08:12:01.378-04:00I've struggled with getting to the elusive sub...I've struggled with getting to the elusive sub-20 for years too. I hate that real pain feeling of a 5k. I much prefer the gentler pain of longer distance running. I somehow managed it on Saturday and honestly it was SO hard. The last mile was basically just me gasping and dying. But you're right, you do have to just go out guns blazing straight form the start. Nothing like a marathon!AnnaTheApplehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13990879249353577282noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2189875022254484779.post-48938322001888032912018-05-13T07:25:34.852-04:002018-05-13T07:25:34.852-04:00The 5k is very challenging to me, too, and I think...The 5k is very challenging to me, too, and I think my biggest problem is not understanding race strategy. The reason I think that is that I have actually PR'd the 5k IN A TRAINING FARTLEK, and not by just a little, either - by about 45 seconds. So I CAN run that pace, I just don't know how in a race. I am sure your PR will come - like me, perhaps you, too, just need to figure that distance out. It's definitely challenging. I'm a distance type, but I'd rather run a 2-miler than a 5k!
