When you're injured and all you want to do is run and everyone around you is running it can be awful. But you just have to look at the bigger picture and go, "OK I'm not running now/running that fast/etc. but I'll get there" and you just have to use that as motivation to keep healthy and strong in your mind. You're doing awesomely. I didn't realize how important that was to actually performing well, but being more positive in general just makes you a more relaxed person, which leads to a relaxed racing mindset. Your story sounds similar to what I describe in the book- very frustrating. Sounds like great things are in store for you next year!Elizabethhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06265175590096078175noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2189875022254484779.post-88511328383605027272016-10-17T16:52:43.033-04:002016-10-17T16:52:43.033-04:00Yeah, it's tough when you feel like you're...Yeah, it's tough when you feel like you're the only one who isn't having the best day of their life! It's great that you've decided on that one. You'll have plenty of time to train in the nice spring weather.Elizabethhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06265175590096078175noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2189875022254484779.post-75663450926543769252016-10-17T16:49:54.573-04:002016-10-17T16:49:54.573-04:00This is a great post! I think it's also harder when it's not due to a deliberate choice on your part (i.e. I don't want to do this race) vs. having to sit out due to injury. It sucks when the choice is taken out of your hands :(Chaitalihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09118655603196065126noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2189875022254484779.post-42004441829147093842016-10-17T11:44:26.801-04:002016-10-17T11:44:26.801-04:00Liz, I always enjoy your blog posts, but this one ...Liz, I always enjoy your blog posts, but this one especially rang true. I fall into that trap all the time. I think I really need to read your book as it will help me get back into my groove next year. haha. Three marathons in a year took a toll on me, and with bad weather at each and every marathon I've ran over the past 18-24 months, reaching Boston has seemed unattainable. Seeing other people succeed when you've been working your booty off is definitely a tough pill to swallow. Thanks for this blog. It brought me back down to earth a little bit. I'm excited for a couple of months' rest before I ramp up again next year. I think I'll be better prepared both physically and mentally to take on 2017 and get a PR. Thanks!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2189875022254484779.post-46117910704900446332016-10-17T08:39:55.343-04:002016-10-17T08:39:55.343-04:00Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this! I definitely experienced this last weekend at the Chicago Marathon; I was so happy to be there cheering on my training partner and experiencing the energy of the crowd and the other runners, but I was so sad that I couldn't be out there, disappointed about my foot (which continues to be an issue as I recover) and now, I realize, lonely. It wasn't about comparing myself to others but feeling like I was an island unto myself--even though I wasn't alone and there were probably quite a few of people who were in my shoes. It's all about perspective. Thanks again!Jesshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14662738071867071906noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2189875022254484779.post-31565008138242937612016-10-16T17:04:08.321-04:002016-10-16T17:04:08.321-04:00Great post. I've signed up to run Grandma's in June next year. And then people asked me why I picked that race--it's not on a lot of people's radar. Isn't that interesting? Seems like everyone wants to do the "in thing" even in our sport. Just do your own thing. And be happy about it.Wendy at Taking the Long Way Homehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09934786207724059919noreply@blogger.com
